Student Research Conference 2014
In 2014, the winner of the Student Research Conference was Martin Sikma, student Meteorology and Air Quality at the University of Wageningen. His undergraduate research was chosen unanimously by a committee of scientists and judged as excellent. In the paper, called “An elementary shallow cumulus parameterization for tropical boundary layers” he inquired the mass moved by clouds, such as damp, chemicals and other pollution. The minister of Education, Jet Bussemaker presented him the award.
The Honourable Mention, was won by Femke van der Wilt of the University of Amsterdam Her research was titled "Gender Differences in the Relationship between Oral and Communicative Competence and Peer Rejection in Preschool". The jury's Chairs Henk Meijer and Imre Horváth found her research to be "very authentic". The Award for the Best Poster presentation was presented to Jessica Aernoudt, Nick Smits and Yentl Pauwel of the Ghent University, who presented their research on the quality of pool water.
The jury remarked the high quality of the presented undergraduate research, and praised the level of the papers, the students' independence and their innovative creativity. The Review Committee, consisting of 47 experienced scientists, received some of the credit of the succcessful edition of the SRC. They evaluated and review over 95 papers on their quality and on the basis of their judgment, the papers were selected.
